Who is AirKenya Express?

Kenya’s pioneer safari airline — based at Wilson Airport since 1987

AirKenya Express is the oldest and most established safari airline operating from Wilson Airport, with roots stretching back to 1975 when Airkenya Ltd was founded with four aircraft — two Piper Navajo and two Beechcraft Baron. The modern AirKenya Express emerged from a 1987 merger with Sunbird Aviation, combining over 20 years of East African general aviation experience into a single scheduled operator.

In 1997 the airline expanded into Tanzania by establishing Regional Air Services, headquartered at Arusha Airport — the first step in what would become a three-country network. The IATA code P2 and ICAO code XAK were assigned in April 2006, and in 2007 the brand became AirKenya Express. The airline now employs approximately 165 people, all trained under FlightSafety International certification, and reported 99.9% on-time safety compliance in 2024.

In April 2025 AirKenya added a new Bombardier Dash 8-200 (registration 5Y-DBA) — its most significant capacity addition in recent years — and was named Kenya’s Leading Domestic Safari Airline at the World Travel Awards 2025. The airline operates from its own exclusive terminal at Wilson Airport, including a dedicated arrivals terminal opened in 2024, a premium departure lounge with free Wi-Fi and a boutique, and complimentary luggage storage for return-circuit passengers.

Two wholly-owned subsidiaries extend AirKenya’s reach beyond Kenya: Regional Air Services in Tanzania (Arusha Airport) and Aerolink Uganda (Entebbe Airport). These enable single-ticket booking for multi-country safari circuits connecting the Maasai Mara with the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Uganda’s national parks — all ticketed as one journey.

Every aircraft in AirKenya’s fleet is selected for its STOL (short-takeoff-and-landing) performance on unpaved, high-altitude African bush airstrips. The fleet spans 11-seat Caravans to 50-seat Dash 7s, giving AirKenya the widest operational range of any scheduled airline at Wilson Airport.

Baggage rules

AirKenya Express baggage policy — three rules every passenger must know

AirKenya’s baggage limits are strict and non-negotiable, driven by the physical limitations of small aircraft holds. Read the current policy at airkenya.com/baggage-policy and the full Wilson Airport baggage guide before packing.

Rule 1 15 kg total limit

Maximum 15 kg / 33 lbs per passenger on all services — domestic and international — inclusive of hand luggage. An additional freight seat can be booked for excess up to 75 kg at USD 5 per kg, subject to availability and the same soft-bag dimension policy. AirKenya also offers complimentary luggage storage at the Wilson terminal for return-circuit passengers who want to leave excess bags in Nairobi.

Rule 2 Soft bags only

All luggage must be soft-sided bags — no hard-shell suitcases. Checked bags should measure maximum 24″ × 18″ × 13″. Hand luggage: 12″ × 21″ × 9″. Hard-shell cases are refused at check-in — not at the discretion of the agent. AirKenya sells soft-sided bags at its Wilson terminal. When packing, treat the 15 kg limit as an absolute: put everything on a scale before you arrive.

Permitted free Personal items

Small handbags, umbrellas, walking sticks, coats and small backpacks stow under the seat or in overhead bins — these do not count against the 15 kg total. Wheelchairs, canes, walkers, crutches and assistive devices for passengers with disabilities are carried free on all routes. If you need to transfer luggage between Kenya safari and a coastal or Tanzania leg, plan your packing accordingly across the different baggage allowances.

Practical packing rule: pack everything — including your camera bag — into one soft duffel of 15 kg or less. Leave your main hard-shell suitcase at your Nairobi hotel. Most hotels offer complimentary left-luggage storage for guests on safari circuits. AirKenya also provides this service free of charge at its Wilson terminal for return-flight passengers.

Travel flow

What flying AirKenya Express from Wilson Airport feels like

The AirKenya experience at Wilson is unlike any large commercial airport. From arrival at the exclusive terminal to boarding on the apron, every step is designed around the specific demands of safari aviation.

1

Book directly at airkenya.com or through your safari operator

AirKenya offers direct online booking for all scheduled routes. Most safari lodge packages include AirKenya flights — confirm with your operator whether flights are included or need separate booking. Charter enquiries go to the charter team via the website. Book early for peak season (July–October) Mara routes, which fill weeks in advance.

For a full comparison of all Wilson Airport airlines on your route, see the Wilson Airport airlines guide.
2

Arrive at the AirKenya exclusive terminal — 60 minutes before departure

Go directly to the AirKenya terminal — not the main Wilson building or Safarilink’s Phoenix House. Present your booking reference, passport or national ID, and soft bag for weighing. The 15 kg limit is enforced at check-in. If excess, arrange storage at the terminal or book a freight seat in advance. Online check-in via airkenya.com is available — you still need to present at the counter for bag drop.

Nairobi traffic between the city and Wilson can take 45–90 minutes at peak hour. Allow enough time. See the getting to Wilson Airport guide.
3

Security, lounge, and boarding across the apron

Security at the AirKenya terminal is fast. Once cleared, you wait in the departure lounge — free Wi-Fi, refreshments, and the boutique. When your flight is called, you walk across the apron to your aircraft. No jet bridges at Wilson. The sound of a Twin Otter or Dash 7 engine running on the apron, the smell of aviation fuel, the first sight of the aircraft you will fly — this is one of the most atmospheric ways to start a safari anywhere in Africa.

Check live Wilson Airport departures on the morning of your flight for any delay notices.
4

The flight — and the view

On departure, the aircraft climbs and tracks toward your destination. If heading to the Mara, the Rift Valley escarpment appears ahead; to Amboseli, Kilimanjaro materialises on the horizon well before landing; to Samburu, the landscape transitions from highland to arid north within the flight’s short duration. On unpressurised aircraft (Caravan and Twin Otter), you fly at lower altitudes — which gives exceptional views. Keep your camera in the seat pocket, not the overhead bin.

5

Call operations on departure day to confirm routing

Because AirKenya circuits serve multiple airstrips per flight, your arrival time can vary by up to 45 minutes from the timetable. Call AirKenya operations on your departure morning — your lodge needs this information to have a vehicle waiting for you at the right strip at the right time. This call is not optional on multi-stop circuits.

AirKenya operations: +254 (0)706 085534 or +254 (0)727 131977. Check Wilson Airport live arrivals for return flight tracking.
Passenger checklist

What to prepare before flying AirKenya Express from Wilson Airport

AirKenya flights are efficient but strict. The most common problems — late arrival, wrong bag type, overweight luggage, missing routing confirmation — are all preventable with this checklist.

✅ Before booking
Confirm you are flying AirKenya and not a different airline on the same route — some Mara airstrips are served by both AirKenya and Safarilink.
Check your airstrip name carefully. The Mara has 10+ strips — ensure your lodge and your AirKenya ticket specify the same one.
Ask your lodge whether their AirKenya circuit is a minimum-pax service and whether your dates fall in the 4-pax low-season requirement (Apr–May, Nov–Dec).
🧳 Packing and luggage
Use a soft duffel bag — not a hard-shell suitcase. AirKenya refuses hard cases at check-in, not as an exception but as policy.
Weigh your bag before you leave the hotel. 15 kg total means everything — checked bag plus hand luggage plus camera bag.
Leave excess luggage at your Nairobi hotel or in AirKenya’s complimentary storage at Wilson. Both options are free for return passengers.
🛫 On departure day
Arrive at the AirKenya exclusive terminal — not the main Wilson building. Allow 60 minutes minimum before departure.
Call AirKenya operations to confirm routing order and arrival time at your airstrip — your lodge needs this for the vehicle pickup.
Keep medicine, valuables and your camera in hand luggage — not in your checked duffel, which goes in the hold.
FAQ

AirKenya Express at Wilson Airport — common questions

The most frequently asked questions about flying AirKenya Express from Wilson Airport — covering check-in, baggage, routes, bookings and the AirKenya vs Safarilink decision.

AirKenya operates from its own exclusive terminal at Wilson Airport — a dedicated building entirely separate from the main Wilson terminal and from Safarilink’s Phoenix House. When you arrive at Wilson, follow the AirKenya signage or ask at the gate. The terminal includes the departure lounge, check-in counters, baggage drop, and the new 2024 arrivals facility with a baggage retrieval area and washrooms. Do not go to the main Wilson building or any other airline’s terminal for AirKenya flights.
AirKenya’s limit is 15 kg total per passenger on all services (domestic and international), inclusive of hand luggage, in soft-sided bags only. Hard-shell suitcases are refused at check-in — not as a guideline but as policy. Excess baggage can be pre-booked as a freight seat (up to 75 kg at USD 5/kg). AirKenya sells soft bags at its Wilson terminal and offers complimentary luggage storage for return-circuit passengers who want to leave excess bags in Nairobi.
AirKenya requires check-in at least 60 minutes before departure at Wilson Airport (and at Kisumu and Entebbe). At bush airstrips, check-in closes 30 minutes before. Late check-in is not accepted at any point. Factor in Nairobi traffic: allow 45–90 minutes from the city centre or JKIA depending on the time of day. See the Wilson Airport check-in guide and the getting-to-Wilson guide.
AirKenya does not fly directly to the Serengeti from Wilson. However, its daily WIL–Kilimanjaro (JRO) service at 13:30 connects at Kilimanjaro to sister company Regional Air Services (Arusha Airport, 15:30 connection), which serves the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Zanzibar, and other Tanzanian destinations. The connection is bookable as a through-ticket via AirKenya.
AirKenya operates on a circuit model — the same aircraft serves multiple airstrips on a single departure, dropping off and picking up passengers at each. This makes it economically viable to maintain daily service to remote airstrips that would not individually fill an aircraft. Your arrival time at your specific strip can vary by up to 45 minutes. AirKenya explicitly recommends calling operations on departure day to confirm the exact routing order. Always pass this time to your lodge so a vehicle can meet you.
Both are excellent. AirKenya has the widest airstrip network — serving over 10 Mara airstrips including remote conservancy strips (Siana, Ngerende, Olare, Ol Seki) that Safarilink does not always cover. Safarilink has online check-in, slightly higher frequency on the main strips, and a Kenya Airways codeshare for international connections. For remote conservancy airstrips, AirKenya is the better or only choice. For the main strips with the highest frequency, compare both. See the Maasai Mara flights guide and the Wilson Airport airlines comparison.
Yes — charter is central to AirKenya’s business. The charter team arranges bespoke flights for any group size, any airstrip in Kenya or the region, at any time. Charter can reach airstrips outside the scheduled network, eliminates circuit-stop delays, and includes helicopter services for locations with no runway. Contact via airkenya.com/charter-flights. Charter becomes cost-competitive per person for groups of four or more, particularly on Samburu where the minimum-pax requirement can make scheduled service uncertain.
All international visitors entering Kenya require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before arrival — apply at least three days before travel at etakenya.go.ke. Applications can be submitted up to three months in advance. This applies to all international arrivals regardless of which Nairobi airport or which airline you connect from. Domestic travel between Kenyan cities on AirKenya does not require an eTA for Kenyan nationals.
P2 · XAK · Wilson Airport · Kenya’s pioneer safari airline since 1987

Nearly four decades of bush flying. The widest airstrip network in East Africa. Still exclusively at Wilson Airport.

AirKenya Express was not built for airports — it was built for airstrips. For the 180-metre grass strip at a remote Laikipia conservancy. For the Mara at first light, when the only sounds are turboprop engines and the distant thunder of the wildebeest migration. For the connection between the Kilimanjaro tarmac and a Serengeti bush strip in a single ticketed journey. Pack your 15 kg soft bag, arrive 60 minutes early at the exclusive AirKenya terminal, call operations to confirm your routing, and prepare for the most atmospheric boarding in Kenya. The view from the Caravan’s high wing over Nairobi National Park — two minutes after departure from Wilson — is the first frame of the safari.
