AirKenya Express
at Wilson Airport
AirKenya Express is Kenya’s pioneer safari airline — headquartered exclusively at Wilson Airport (WIL) since 1987 and flying to more bush airstrips across East Africa than any other scheduled carrier. This is the complete guide: fleet, routes, schedules, baggage rules, terminal facilities, check-in process and how to book your AirKenya flight from Wilson Airport.

Kenya’s pioneer safari airline — based at Wilson Airport since 1987
AirKenya Express is the oldest and most established safari airline operating from Wilson Airport, with roots stretching back to 1975 when Airkenya Ltd was founded with four aircraft — two Piper Navajo and two Beechcraft Baron. The modern AirKenya Express emerged from a 1987 merger with Sunbird Aviation, combining over 20 years of East African general aviation experience into a single scheduled operator.
In 1997 the airline expanded into Tanzania by establishing Regional Air Services, headquartered at Arusha Airport — the first step in what would become a three-country network. The IATA code P2 and ICAO code XAK were assigned in April 2006, and in 2007 the brand became AirKenya Express. The airline now employs approximately 165 people, all trained under FlightSafety International certification, and reported 99.9% on-time safety compliance in 2024.
In April 2025 AirKenya added a new Bombardier Dash 8-200 (registration 5Y-DBA) — its most significant capacity addition in recent years — and was named Kenya’s Leading Domestic Safari Airline at the World Travel Awards 2025. The airline operates from its own exclusive terminal at Wilson Airport, including a dedicated arrivals terminal opened in 2024, a premium departure lounge with free Wi-Fi and a boutique, and complimentary luggage storage for return-circuit passengers.
Two wholly-owned subsidiaries extend AirKenya’s reach beyond Kenya: Regional Air Services in Tanzania (Arusha Airport) and Aerolink Uganda (Entebbe Airport). These enable single-ticket booking for multi-country safari circuits connecting the Maasai Mara with the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Uganda’s national parks — all ticketed as one journey.
AirKenya’s competitive edge: the widest bush-airstrip network in Kenya, the only Dash 7 aircraft at Wilson Airport, and the Twin Otter’s ability to reach strips unreachable by other scheduled carriers — including the most remote conservancies in the Mara, Laikipia, and northern Kenya.

AirKenya operates four aircraft types across a network that stretches from Wilson Airport’s apron to remote bush airstrips in the Maasai Mara, the arid north, and international connections in Tanzania and Uganda.
DHC-6 Twin Otter
AirKenya operates three Twin Otters — 16–19 seats each. The Twin Otter’s short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) capability allows it to reach remote airstrips in Samburu, Lewa, Loisaba and northern Kenya that no other scheduled airline serves.

Bombardier Dash 8-200
AirKenya received its newest Dash 8-200 (registration 5Y-DBA) in April 2025. Pressurised, twin-engine, 37 seats — the most comfortable aircraft in the AirKenya fleet and the choice for group safaris and the daily Kilimanjaro international service.

The iconic safari aircraft — single turboprop, high-wing, 11–12 seats. The high wing means passengers look straight down at wildlife below on approach. AirKenya uses Caravans on charter flights and smaller group circuits where the larger types would be oversized.

Wilson Airport (WIL), Nairobi
AirKenya’s home since its founding — Africa’s busiest light-aircraft hub by movements. The exclusive AirKenya terminal is separate from the main Wilson building and includes the dedicated departure lounge, new arrivals terminal (2024), and luggage storage for return passengers.

Every aircraft in AirKenya’s fleet is selected for its STOL (short-takeoff-and-landing) performance on unpaved, high-altitude African bush airstrips. The fleet spans 11-seat Caravans to 50-seat Dash 7s, giving AirKenya the widest operational range of any scheduled airline at Wilson Airport.

AirKenya Express baggage policy — three rules every passenger must know
AirKenya’s baggage limits are strict and non-negotiable, driven by the physical limitations of small aircraft holds. Read the current policy at airkenya.com/baggage-policy and the full Wilson Airport baggage guide before packing.
Rule 1 15 kg total limit
Maximum 15 kg / 33 lbs per passenger on all services — domestic and international — inclusive of hand luggage. An additional freight seat can be booked for excess up to 75 kg at USD 5 per kg, subject to availability and the same soft-bag dimension policy. AirKenya also offers complimentary luggage storage at the Wilson terminal for return-circuit passengers who want to leave excess bags in Nairobi.
Rule 2 Soft bags only
All luggage must be soft-sided bags — no hard-shell suitcases. Checked bags should measure maximum 24″ × 18″ × 13″. Hand luggage: 12″ × 21″ × 9″. Hard-shell cases are refused at check-in — not at the discretion of the agent. AirKenya sells soft-sided bags at its Wilson terminal. When packing, treat the 15 kg limit as an absolute: put everything on a scale before you arrive.
Permitted free Personal items
Small handbags, umbrellas, walking sticks, coats and small backpacks stow under the seat or in overhead bins — these do not count against the 15 kg total. Wheelchairs, canes, walkers, crutches and assistive devices for passengers with disabilities are carried free on all routes. If you need to transfer luggage between Kenya safari and a coastal or Tanzania leg, plan your packing accordingly across the different baggage allowances.
Practical packing rule: pack everything — including your camera bag — into one soft duffel of 15 kg or less. Leave your main hard-shell suitcase at your Nairobi hotel. Most hotels offer complimentary left-luggage storage for guests on safari circuits. AirKenya also provides this service free of charge at its Wilson terminal for return-flight passengers.
What flying AirKenya Express from Wilson Airport feels like
The AirKenya experience at Wilson is unlike any large commercial airport. From arrival at the exclusive terminal to boarding on the apron, every step is designed around the specific demands of safari aviation.
Book directly at airkenya.com or through your safari operator
AirKenya offers direct online booking for all scheduled routes. Most safari lodge packages include AirKenya flights — confirm with your operator whether flights are included or need separate booking. Charter enquiries go to the charter team via the website. Book early for peak season (July–October) Mara routes, which fill weeks in advance.
Arrive at the AirKenya exclusive terminal — 60 minutes before departure
Go directly to the AirKenya terminal — not the main Wilson building or Safarilink’s Phoenix House. Present your booking reference, passport or national ID, and soft bag for weighing. The 15 kg limit is enforced at check-in. If excess, arrange storage at the terminal or book a freight seat in advance. Online check-in via airkenya.com is available — you still need to present at the counter for bag drop.
Security, lounge, and boarding across the apron
Security at the AirKenya terminal is fast. Once cleared, you wait in the departure lounge — free Wi-Fi, refreshments, and the boutique. When your flight is called, you walk across the apron to your aircraft. No jet bridges at Wilson. The sound of a Twin Otter or Dash 7 engine running on the apron, the smell of aviation fuel, the first sight of the aircraft you will fly — this is one of the most atmospheric ways to start a safari anywhere in Africa.
The flight — and the view
On departure, the aircraft climbs and tracks toward your destination. If heading to the Mara, the Rift Valley escarpment appears ahead; to Amboseli, Kilimanjaro materialises on the horizon well before landing; to Samburu, the landscape transitions from highland to arid north within the flight’s short duration. On unpressurised aircraft (Caravan and Twin Otter), you fly at lower altitudes — which gives exceptional views. Keep your camera in the seat pocket, not the overhead bin.
Call operations on departure day to confirm routing
Because AirKenya circuits serve multiple airstrips per flight, your arrival time can vary by up to 45 minutes from the timetable. Call AirKenya operations on your departure morning — your lodge needs this information to have a vehicle waiting for you at the right strip at the right time. This call is not optional on multi-stop circuits.

Which WIL airline fits your route?
Nearly four decades of bush flying. The widest airstrip network in East Africa. Still exclusively at Wilson Airport.
AirKenya Express was not built for airports — it was built for airstrips. For the 180-metre grass strip at a remote Laikipia conservancy. For the Mara at first light, when the only sounds are turboprop engines and the distant thunder of the wildebeest migration. For the connection between the Kilimanjaro tarmac and a Serengeti bush strip in a single ticketed journey. Pack your 15 kg soft bag, arrive 60 minutes early at the exclusive AirKenya terminal, call operations to confirm your routing, and prepare for the most atmospheric boarding in Kenya. The view from the Caravan’s high wing over Nairobi National Park — two minutes after departure from Wilson — is the first frame of the safari.
