Wilson Airport
Check-In Guide
Steps, Times & What to Expect

Check-in at Wilson Airport is unlike any large international hub. There are no concourses, no jet bridges, and multiple operator-specific buildings. Arrive at the wrong terminal or the wrong time, and you miss your flight. This guide tells you exactly what to do, step by step.

Arrive by 60 min Before departure — minimum
Desk closes 30 min Before departure — AirKenya
Online check-in 18–2 hrs Before departure — Safarilink
JKIA transfer 90 min Allow for road traffic

The full process

Wilson Airport check-in — step by step

From arriving at the airport to walking across the apron to your aircraft — here is every step of the Wilson Airport departure process in sequence.

1

Arrive at the right terminal building

Wilson Airport does not have a single unified departure terminal. Each major airline operates from its own building. AirKenya Express uses an exclusive terminal; Safarilink uses a separate dedicated terminal. Other carriers and charter operators use additional check-in points. When you arrive at Wilson, do not head for a generic “departures” entrance — head directly for your airline’s signboard.

Before you leave for the airport: Confirm exactly which building your airline uses. If you are unsure, your booking confirmation email or your safari operator will specify. See the full Wilson Airport terminals guide.
2

Clear security on entering the terminal

At Wilson Airport, security screening happens at the entrance to the terminal building — not at a gate after check-in as at large hubs. As you enter your airline’s terminal, you will pass your carry-on luggage through an X-ray machine and walk through a security scanner.

The process at Wilson is significantly faster than at JKIA or major international airports. Most passengers clear security in under 5 minutes. Remove laptops from bags if requested, and place phones and keys in a tray as prompted.

Security at Wilson is compact and quick — a genuine advantage over larger airports. If you have already cleared JKIA arrivals and are carrying no liquids over 100ml, the process is typically seamless.
3

Present yourself at the check-in counter

After clearing security, proceed directly to the check-in counter. Even if you have completed online check-in (available on Safarilink), you are still required to present yourself at the counter in person — your physical presence is needed to confirm your seat and load your luggage. Online check-in alone is not sufficient to board at Wilson Airport.

At the counter, you will present:

  • Your booking reference or e-ticket (on phone or printed)
  • Your government-issued ID (National ID for domestic Kenya flights; passport for cross-border routes to Tanzania, Uganda)
  • Your luggage — which will be weighed at this step
Cross-border routes require a valid passport. If you are flying from Wilson to Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, or Entebbe, a National ID is not sufficient — you must carry your passport with all relevant visas. See the WIL vs JKIA guide for international flight clarifications.
4

Baggage weigh — the moment of truth

Your checked luggage is weighed at the counter. This is enforced strictly at Wilson Airport because the aircraft types — Cessna Caravans, Dash 8s — have limited hold capacity and strict weight-and-balance requirements. If your bag exceeds the limit, you will be asked to pay an excess baggage fee or remove items before boarding.

Most safari routes: 15 kg total per person, inclusive of hand luggage, in soft bags only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot fit in light aircraft holds and will be refused. See the full Wilson Airport baggage rules guide for the airline-by-airline breakdown.

Each piece of luggage — including hand baggage — receives a coloured luggage tag. On Safarilink, each tag features a different safari wildlife design; they make a small souvenir of your trip. These tags identify your bag at your destination bush airstrip.
5

Receive your boarding pass

Once baggage is accepted and your ID has been verified, the check-in agent issues your boarding pass. At Wilson, this is typically a printed card or paper stub — not a digital gate scan as at large hubs, though some airlines also accept mobile boarding passes. Keep this document with you until you board the aircraft.

Your boarding pass confirms your seat assignment, departure time, and aircraft details. On multi-stop safari circuits — where the aircraft serves several airstrips on a single flight — confirm with the agent which stop corresponds to your destination.

Some early morning safari flights depart before dawn. If you are on a 06:30 or 07:00 departure, the boarding call may come very quickly after check-in. Stay in the waiting area and listen for verbal announcements — Wilson’s facilities are compact and the boarding call carries clearly.
6

Wait in the departure lounge

After check-in, proceed to the airline’s waiting area. At Safarilink’s terminal, the lounge overlooks the apron — passengers can watch the aircraft preparations directly from the waiting area. The café at Wilson Airport’s main building is on the second floor and serves coffee and light snacks; Safarilink’s own terminal also has a small refreshments facility.

Wilson is not a large airport. The walk from the lounge to your aircraft is short, and boarding is announced verbally by ground staff. There are no gate screens displaying boarding times — boarding calls are made directly by the airline and are easily audible. Stay alert, especially on early morning departures when multiple airlines board simultaneously.

7

Board your aircraft — walk across the apron

There are no jet bridges at Wilson Airport. When boarding is called, you walk directly from the terminal building across the apron — the paved surface of the airfield — to your aircraft. This is one of the most distinctive features of the Wilson experience.

Early morning Nairobi can be cool; bring a light layer if departing before 09:00. The walk to the aircraft is typically 30–60 seconds. Your boarding pass will be checked by a ground agent at the aircraft steps.

Photography on the apron: Many passengers enjoy photographing the array of small aircraft on the WIL apron — it is a genuine light-aviation hub with fascinating diversity of types. Ask your airline if photography is permitted before boarding; most operators are relaxed about this in the waiting area and on the apron walk.

The critical point about online check-in at Wilson Airport: Even if you have checked in online and have a mobile boarding pass, you are still required to present yourself at the airline’s check-in counter before your Wilson Airport flight. Online check-in does not allow you to bypass the counter at WIL — your physical presence is required for bag drop, identity verification, and confirmation of your seat. Arriving late and showing a mobile boarding pass will not prevent you from missing your flight if the desk has closed.

Terminal locations

Which terminal do you use for check-in at Wilson Airport?

Wilson Airport has no single unified terminal. Each major airline has its own check-in building. Going to the wrong one costs time you cannot afford before a safari flight. For the full layout guide, see Wilson Airport terminals.

✈️
Exclusive terminal

AirKenya Express Terminal

AirKenya operates from its own exclusive, purpose-built terminal building at Wilson Airport. All AirKenya check-in, baggage drop, and boarding processes are handled entirely within this facility. Do not go to any other building — go directly to the AirKenya terminal sign. The terminal has its own dedicated check-in counters, a security screening point, and a waiting area.

🛫
Dedicated terminal

Safarilink Terminal

Safarilink operates from its own dedicated terminal at Wilson Airport, reviewed by passengers as clean, modern, and efficient. It has its own check-in counters, security screening, a waiting lounge overlooking the apron, and a small refreshments facility. Passengers can watch aircraft from the lounge while waiting. Check in at the Safarilink terminal only — not at any other facility at WIL.

🏢
Main building

Main Terminal / Other Airlines

The main Wilson Airport building serves Skyward Express and other scheduled carriers. It includes check-in counters, a general security screening point, a waiting area, and the second-floor café that serves coffee and light snacks. If you are flying with a carrier that does not have a dedicated terminal, this is your check-in location. Check your booking confirmation for the exact counter allocation.

🛩️
Charter

Charter Operator Check-In

Charter operators at Wilson Airport — including Aircraft Leasing Services, Renegade Air, and private aircraft operators — use their own facilities on the airport campus. If you are on a charter flight, your operator will provide specific instructions for where to present yourself. Do not assume a standard public terminal applies to charter bookings.

Documents required

What ID and documents do you need for Wilson Airport check-in?

Document requirements at Wilson Airport vary by route type. Domestic Kenyan flights have simpler requirements than cross-border services to Tanzania or Uganda.

🪪

Kenya National ID — domestic flights

For Kenyan citizens flying domestic routes from Wilson Airport (Kisumu, Mombasa, Lamu, Diani, Mara, Amboseli, etc.), a valid Kenya National ID is accepted at check-in. This applies to all scheduled domestic carriers at WIL including AirKenya, Safarilink, and Skyward Express. Have your ID physically present — digital copies are not always accepted.

🛂

Passport — all passengers on domestic flights

Non-Kenyan passengers must carry a valid passport for all Wilson Airport flights. For international visitors on safari packages, your passport is your primary travel document throughout Kenya. Keep it accessible throughout your trip — you will present it at WIL check-in for every flight, both from Nairobi and at the return airstrip when flying back.

✈️

Passport + valid visa — cross-border routes

If you are flying from Wilson Airport to Tanzania (Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar) or Uganda (Entebbe), you must carry a valid passport plus any required entry visa for the destination country. East African Community single tourist visa holders can use that document for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Check visa requirements for your specific nationality before travel.

📱

Booking confirmation / e-ticket

Bring your booking confirmation reference — either on your phone or printed. This is required at check-in to pull up your reservation. Your safari operator should have provided this; if booking directly with the airline, it will have been emailed at the time of booking. Having this accessible before you reach the counter speeds the process significantly.

What does NOT work at Wilson Airport

Digital photos of a National ID on a phone screen are not always accepted — bring the physical card. Expired passports are refused even for domestic flights. A booking reference alone without any ID is not sufficient. If your booking has been made under a different name from your ID (e.g., married name vs maiden name), contact your airline before travel to correct the record.

🧒

Children and minors

Children under 12 travelling with a documented adult are required to have documentation of their own — a birth certificate is typically sufficient for domestic Kenya flights. For cross-border flights, children also require a valid passport. Unaccompanied minors must be pre-arranged directly with the airline — Safarilink does not accept unaccompanied minor bookings online.

Baggage at check-in

What happens to your bags at Wilson Airport check-in?

Baggage handling at Wilson Airport check-in is the most consequential part of the process. Weight limits are enforced and hard-shell cases will be refused. For the complete breakdown see the Wilson Airport baggage rules guide.

At check-in: Every bag — including hand luggage — is weighed on the scale at the counter. The agent will total the weight and compare to your allowance. If you exceed the limit, you will be asked to pay an excess fee before proceeding. This cannot be resolved after check-in closes.

What Safarilink gives you at check-in: Each bag receives a unique safari-themed luggage tag — a different wildlife design per destination. These tags identify your bag at bush airstrips on return. They have become a small souvenir of the WIL experience.

Hard-shell suitcases will be refused at Wilson Airport check-in on safari routes. The aircraft hold on a Cessna 208B Caravan physically cannot accommodate standard hard-shell luggage — the dimensions do not fit. If you only have a hard-shell case, leave it in storage at your Nairobi hotel and bring a soft duffel for the safari legs of your trip. Most Nairobi hotels offer complimentary or low-cost luggage storage.

What goes wrong

The most common Wilson Airport check-in mistakes — and how to avoid them

First-time Wilson Airport passengers make the same errors repeatedly. Every one of these is avoidable with preparation.

Arriving less than 60 minutes before departure

The single most common cause of missed Wilson Airport flights. Traffic from JKIA to WIL can take 90 minutes in morning rush hours. Many visitors calculate “60 minutes from arriving at Wilson” but do not allow for the road transfer time. Budget total time from your JKIA arrival to WIL check-in — not just airport-to-airport.

🏢

Going to the wrong terminal building

Arriving at the wrong airline building and realising your mistake costs 5–10 minutes — time you cannot afford if you are already close to the check-in deadline. Confirm your specific terminal (AirKenya exclusive, Safarilink, main building, charter area) in your booking email before leaving for the airport.

🧳

Arriving with a hard-shell suitcase on a safari route

Hard-shell cases cannot fit in light aircraft holds. They are refused at check-in, not at the gate. If refused, you must either remove the case (which may then need to be stored at the airport or returned to Nairobi), pay for oversized luggage handling if the airline can accommodate it, or accept that you may not be able to board. Leave hard cases at your hotel.

📱

Thinking online check-in means you can skip the counter

Safarilink’s online check-in is a seat-selection tool — not an airport bypass. Even if you have a mobile boarding pass, you must still present at the check-in counter to confirm your presence, have your bag weighed, and receive your physical luggage tag. Arriving at Wilson and heading straight to a gate after online check-in will result in a missed flight.

📷

Underestimating camera bag weight

Wildlife photographers frequently exceed the 15 kg limit because they do not count their camera bag in their total allowance. At Wilson, the camera bag is hand luggage and is included in the 15 kg total. A DSLR body, two lenses, and a charger can easily weigh 5–7 kg — leaving only 8–10 kg for clothing and other items. Weigh your camera kit as part of your total before leaving home.

How to do it right — the 90-minute rule

The safest approach: plan to be at your Wilson Airport airline’s check-in counter 90 minutes before departure. This gives you 30 minutes of buffer for traffic, finding the terminal, and any unexpected delays. The 60-minute minimum leaves no margin for error when connecting from JKIA. Add more time if travelling with children, large groups, or heavy camera equipment.

Pre-flight checklist

Your complete Wilson Airport check-in checklist

Everything to check before you leave for the airport, on arrival, and at the counter.

🌙 The night before
Confirm your departure time and calculate your required leave time from your hotel (allow 90 min from city, 2 hrs from JKIA)
Confirm which terminal or airline building you need at Wilson (AirKenya / Safarilink / main building / charter)
Weigh your bag — total including camera bag and hand luggage must not exceed 15 kg on safari routes (20 kg on some coastal routes)
Confirm bag is soft-sided — duffel, roll-top, or soft backpack. Hard-shell cases are refused at check-in
Locate your booking reference / e-ticket and ensure it is accessible on phone or printed
Locate your passport or National ID — physical document, not digital copy. Cross-border flights require passport + any required visas
Complete Safarilink online check-in (if flying Safarilink) between 18 hours and 2 hours before departure to secure your preferred seat
☀️ Morning of departure
Check live departures at WIL for any schedule changes to your flight
Leave for Wilson Airport with enough time to arrive at the check-in counter 60–90 minutes before departure — accounting for Nairobi traffic
If transferring from JKIA, have your Uber or taxi pre-booked or your safari operator’s driver’s WhatsApp number ready for confirmation
Bring a light jacket or layer if departing before 09:00 — early mornings at Wilson and on the apron can be cool
Ensure phone is charged — you may need booking reference, online boarding pass, or flight tracking at the terminal
🏢 At Wilson Airport
Head directly to your airline’s terminal building — do not enter any other building first
Clear security screening at the terminal entrance — bag through X-ray, walk through scanner. Remove laptops and phones if prompted
Present at the check-in counter with: booking reference · ID/passport · all luggage for weighing
Have your bag weighed at the counter — everything you are carrying, including hand luggage and camera bag, must be within the limit
Collect your boarding pass and luggage tags — confirm your destination airstrip, especially on multi-stop Mara circuits
Wait in the departure lounge and listen for your boarding call — it will be announced verbally by airline ground staff
Walk to your aircraft when called — across the apron. No jet bridge. Have your boarding pass ready for the agent at the aircraft steps
FAQ

Wilson Airport check-in — frequently asked questions

The questions travellers most often ask about checking in at Wilson Airport.

Arrive at the check-in counter at Wilson Airport at least 60 minutes before your scheduled departure time — this is the official requirement for both AirKenya and Safarilink from WIL. The check-in desk closes 30 minutes before departure. In practice, plan to arrive at the terminal building itself 75–90 minutes early to allow for the walk from the drop-off point to your airline’s building and any security queue.
No. Safarilink’s online check-in — available via flysafarilink.com between 18 hours and 2 hours before departure — allows you to choose your seat for free and get a mobile boarding pass. However, Safarilink explicitly states that passengers must still present themselves at the check-in counter to confirm their presence. Online check-in does not bypass the counter requirement at Wilson Airport.
AirKenya Express uses its own exclusive terminal building at Wilson Airport — entirely separate from the Safarilink terminal and the main building. When you arrive at WIL, follow the signage for AirKenya or ask the gate security to point you to the AirKenya terminal. All check-in, security, and boarding for AirKenya flights at WIL is handled within this dedicated facility.
If you arrive after the check-in desk has closed (30 minutes before departure for most WIL routes), you will not be permitted to board. The desk will not reopen and the airline may reallocate your seat to standby passengers. You will need to contact the airline to discuss rebooking options, which will depend on availability and your ticket conditions. There are rarely alternative flights on the same day to bush destinations — this is particularly serious for safari itineraries with pre-booked lodge nights.
Kenyan citizens can use their National ID for domestic flights. Non-Kenyan travellers — including all international safari visitors — must carry their passport for all Wilson Airport flights, both domestic and international. Cross-border flights (to Tanzania, Uganda) require a valid passport regardless of nationality. Always carry your passport on your person throughout your Kenya safari itinerary.
Security at Wilson Airport is positioned at the entry to the terminal building — not at a gate after check-in. It is significantly faster than at large international airports. In normal conditions, most passengers clear the X-ray machine and security scanner within 2–5 minutes. During peak morning safari departure times, there may be a short queue, but this is rarely more than 5–10 minutes.
On safari routes, no. Hard-shell suitcases physically cannot fit in the holds of Cessna Caravans and similar light aircraft used on safari sectors. They will be refused at check-in. Soft-sided luggage — duffel bags, roll-tops, soft backpacks — is required. The recommendation is to store your hard-shell case at your Nairobi hotel before departing for the bush and collect it on your return.
Yes. Many AirKenya and Safarilink flights serve multiple airstrips on a single routing — for example, Wilson → Keekorok → Mara Serena → Ol Seki on one circuit. When checking in at Wilson, confirm your specific destination airstrip with the check-in agent, as your boarding pass may show the first stop while your final destination is later in the routing. Return flights at remote airstrips are typically very informal — your driver will know when to take you to the airstrip.
