Wilson Airport
Check-In Guide —
Steps, Times & What to Expect
Check-in at Wilson Airport is unlike any large international hub. There are no concourses, no jet bridges, and multiple operator-specific buildings. Arrive at the wrong terminal or the wrong time, and you miss your flight. This guide tells you exactly what to do, step by step.
Check-in at a glance
The golden rule: Arrive at Wilson Airport at least 60 minutes before departure. AirKenya check-in closes 30 minutes before departure — there are no exceptions and no re-opening of the desk.
Wilson Airport check-in — step by step
From arriving at the airport to walking across the apron to your aircraft — here is every step of the Wilson Airport departure process in sequence.
Arrive at the right terminal building
Wilson Airport does not have a single unified departure terminal. Each major airline operates from its own building. AirKenya Express uses an exclusive terminal; Safarilink uses a separate dedicated terminal. Other carriers and charter operators use additional check-in points. When you arrive at Wilson, do not head for a generic “departures” entrance — head directly for your airline’s signboard.
Clear security on entering the terminal
At Wilson Airport, security screening happens at the entrance to the terminal building — not at a gate after check-in as at large hubs. As you enter your airline’s terminal, you will pass your carry-on luggage through an X-ray machine and walk through a security scanner.
The process at Wilson is significantly faster than at JKIA or major international airports. Most passengers clear security in under 5 minutes. Remove laptops from bags if requested, and place phones and keys in a tray as prompted.
Present yourself at the check-in counter
After clearing security, proceed directly to the check-in counter. Even if you have completed online check-in (available on Safarilink), you are still required to present yourself at the counter in person — your physical presence is needed to confirm your seat and load your luggage. Online check-in alone is not sufficient to board at Wilson Airport.
At the counter, you will present:
- Your booking reference or e-ticket (on phone or printed)
- Your government-issued ID (National ID for domestic Kenya flights; passport for cross-border routes to Tanzania, Uganda)
- Your luggage — which will be weighed at this step
Baggage weigh — the moment of truth
Your checked luggage is weighed at the counter. This is enforced strictly at Wilson Airport because the aircraft types — Cessna Caravans, Dash 8s — have limited hold capacity and strict weight-and-balance requirements. If your bag exceeds the limit, you will be asked to pay an excess baggage fee or remove items before boarding.
Most safari routes: 15 kg total per person, inclusive of hand luggage, in soft bags only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot fit in light aircraft holds and will be refused. See the full Wilson Airport baggage rules guide for the airline-by-airline breakdown.
Receive your boarding pass
Once baggage is accepted and your ID has been verified, the check-in agent issues your boarding pass. At Wilson, this is typically a printed card or paper stub — not a digital gate scan as at large hubs, though some airlines also accept mobile boarding passes. Keep this document with you until you board the aircraft.
Your boarding pass confirms your seat assignment, departure time, and aircraft details. On multi-stop safari circuits — where the aircraft serves several airstrips on a single flight — confirm with the agent which stop corresponds to your destination.
Wait in the departure lounge
After check-in, proceed to the airline’s waiting area. At Safarilink’s terminal, the lounge overlooks the apron — passengers can watch the aircraft preparations directly from the waiting area. The café at Wilson Airport’s main building is on the second floor and serves coffee and light snacks; Safarilink’s own terminal also has a small refreshments facility.
Wilson is not a large airport. The walk from the lounge to your aircraft is short, and boarding is announced verbally by ground staff. There are no gate screens displaying boarding times — boarding calls are made directly by the airline and are easily audible. Stay alert, especially on early morning departures when multiple airlines board simultaneously.
Board your aircraft — walk across the apron
There are no jet bridges at Wilson Airport. When boarding is called, you walk directly from the terminal building across the apron — the paved surface of the airfield — to your aircraft. This is one of the most distinctive features of the Wilson experience.
Early morning Nairobi can be cool; bring a light layer if departing before 09:00. The walk to the aircraft is typically 30–60 seconds. Your boarding pass will be checked by a ground agent at the aircraft steps.
Check-in timing — by airline and route type
Each airline at Wilson Airport publishes its own check-in and desk-closure times. These vary by route type — domestic, cross-border international, and bush destinations. Always use the rule for your specific airline and route.

Online check-in at Wilson Airport — what is available?
Online check-in is available for some Wilson Airport airlines but does not replace the requirement to present at the counter. Here is the complete picture for each carrier.
Safarilink
Online check-in available via website and mobile
AirKenya Express
Check-in at exclusive terminal — 60 min before departure
The critical point about online check-in at Wilson Airport: Even if you have checked in online and have a mobile boarding pass, you are still required to present yourself at the airline’s check-in counter before your Wilson Airport flight. Online check-in does not allow you to bypass the counter at WIL — your physical presence is required for bag drop, identity verification, and confirmation of your seat. Arriving late and showing a mobile boarding pass will not prevent you from missing your flight if the desk has closed.
Which terminal do you use for check-in at Wilson Airport?
Wilson Airport has no single unified terminal. Each major airline has its own check-in building. Going to the wrong one costs time you cannot afford before a safari flight. For the full layout guide, see Wilson Airport terminals.
AirKenya Express Terminal
AirKenya operates from its own exclusive, purpose-built terminal building at Wilson Airport. All AirKenya check-in, baggage drop, and boarding processes are handled entirely within this facility. Do not go to any other building — go directly to the AirKenya terminal sign. The terminal has its own dedicated check-in counters, a security screening point, and a waiting area.
Safarilink Terminal
Safarilink operates from its own dedicated terminal at Wilson Airport, reviewed by passengers as clean, modern, and efficient. It has its own check-in counters, security screening, a waiting lounge overlooking the apron, and a small refreshments facility. Passengers can watch aircraft from the lounge while waiting. Check in at the Safarilink terminal only — not at any other facility at WIL.
Main Terminal / Other Airlines
The main Wilson Airport building serves Skyward Express and other scheduled carriers. It includes check-in counters, a general security screening point, a waiting area, and the second-floor café that serves coffee and light snacks. If you are flying with a carrier that does not have a dedicated terminal, this is your check-in location. Check your booking confirmation for the exact counter allocation.
Charter Operator Check-In
Charter operators at Wilson Airport — including Aircraft Leasing Services, Renegade Air, and private aircraft operators — use their own facilities on the airport campus. If you are on a charter flight, your operator will provide specific instructions for where to present yourself. Do not assume a standard public terminal applies to charter bookings.
What ID and documents do you need for Wilson Airport check-in?
Document requirements at Wilson Airport vary by route type. Domestic Kenyan flights have simpler requirements than cross-border services to Tanzania or Uganda.
Kenya National ID — domestic flights
For Kenyan citizens flying domestic routes from Wilson Airport (Kisumu, Mombasa, Lamu, Diani, Mara, Amboseli, etc.), a valid Kenya National ID is accepted at check-in. This applies to all scheduled domestic carriers at WIL including AirKenya, Safarilink, and Skyward Express. Have your ID physically present — digital copies are not always accepted.
Passport — all passengers on domestic flights
Non-Kenyan passengers must carry a valid passport for all Wilson Airport flights. For international visitors on safari packages, your passport is your primary travel document throughout Kenya. Keep it accessible throughout your trip — you will present it at WIL check-in for every flight, both from Nairobi and at the return airstrip when flying back.
Passport + valid visa — cross-border routes
If you are flying from Wilson Airport to Tanzania (Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar) or Uganda (Entebbe), you must carry a valid passport plus any required entry visa for the destination country. East African Community single tourist visa holders can use that document for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Check visa requirements for your specific nationality before travel.
Booking confirmation / e-ticket
Bring your booking confirmation reference — either on your phone or printed. This is required at check-in to pull up your reservation. Your safari operator should have provided this; if booking directly with the airline, it will have been emailed at the time of booking. Having this accessible before you reach the counter speeds the process significantly.
What does NOT work at Wilson Airport
Digital photos of a National ID on a phone screen are not always accepted — bring the physical card. Expired passports are refused even for domestic flights. A booking reference alone without any ID is not sufficient. If your booking has been made under a different name from your ID (e.g., married name vs maiden name), contact your airline before travel to correct the record.
Children and minors
Children under 12 travelling with a documented adult are required to have documentation of their own — a birth certificate is typically sufficient for domestic Kenya flights. For cross-border flights, children also require a valid passport. Unaccompanied minors must be pre-arranged directly with the airline — Safarilink does not accept unaccompanied minor bookings online.
What happens to your bags at Wilson Airport check-in?
Baggage handling at Wilson Airport check-in is the most consequential part of the process. Weight limits are enforced and hard-shell cases will be refused. For the complete breakdown see the Wilson Airport baggage rules guide.
Hard-shell suitcases will be refused at Wilson Airport check-in on safari routes. The aircraft hold on a Cessna 208B Caravan physically cannot accommodate standard hard-shell luggage — the dimensions do not fit. If you only have a hard-shell case, leave it in storage at your Nairobi hotel and bring a soft duffel for the safari legs of your trip. Most Nairobi hotels offer complimentary or low-cost luggage storage.
The most common Wilson Airport check-in mistakes — and how to avoid them
First-time Wilson Airport passengers make the same errors repeatedly. Every one of these is avoidable with preparation.
Arriving less than 60 minutes before departure
The single most common cause of missed Wilson Airport flights. Traffic from JKIA to WIL can take 90 minutes in morning rush hours. Many visitors calculate “60 minutes from arriving at Wilson” but do not allow for the road transfer time. Budget total time from your JKIA arrival to WIL check-in — not just airport-to-airport.
Going to the wrong terminal building
Arriving at the wrong airline building and realising your mistake costs 5–10 minutes — time you cannot afford if you are already close to the check-in deadline. Confirm your specific terminal (AirKenya exclusive, Safarilink, main building, charter area) in your booking email before leaving for the airport.
Arriving with a hard-shell suitcase on a safari route
Hard-shell cases cannot fit in light aircraft holds. They are refused at check-in, not at the gate. If refused, you must either remove the case (which may then need to be stored at the airport or returned to Nairobi), pay for oversized luggage handling if the airline can accommodate it, or accept that you may not be able to board. Leave hard cases at your hotel.
Thinking online check-in means you can skip the counter
Safarilink’s online check-in is a seat-selection tool — not an airport bypass. Even if you have a mobile boarding pass, you must still present at the check-in counter to confirm your presence, have your bag weighed, and receive your physical luggage tag. Arriving at Wilson and heading straight to a gate after online check-in will result in a missed flight.
Underestimating camera bag weight
Wildlife photographers frequently exceed the 15 kg limit because they do not count their camera bag in their total allowance. At Wilson, the camera bag is hand luggage and is included in the 15 kg total. A DSLR body, two lenses, and a charger can easily weigh 5–7 kg — leaving only 8–10 kg for clothing and other items. Weigh your camera kit as part of your total before leaving home.
How to do it right — the 90-minute rule
The safest approach: plan to be at your Wilson Airport airline’s check-in counter 90 minutes before departure. This gives you 30 minutes of buffer for traffic, finding the terminal, and any unexpected delays. The 60-minute minimum leaves no margin for error when connecting from JKIA. Add more time if travelling with children, large groups, or heavy camera equipment.
